The Challenge

The Challenge was to remodel a 20 year old kitchen utilizing the existing sink and flooring as well as more than doubling the countertop & cabinet space on a cost effective fixed budget.

The client contacted us after meeting with Tom and the team over at Home Outlet on George Urban, they specialize in high quality cost effective cabinets for Kitchens & Bathrooms.

M&N are currently the only remodel team the Tom and the the team recommend due to our ability to undertake the whole project from Design to Demo, Construction and Finishing.

Their existing Kitchen was remodeled by Home Depot some 20 years earlier, interestingly the Home Depot team had used formica covered plywood as a backsplash.

The Design

Our Design team came up with a cost effective concept based around Home Outlets solid oak unfinished cabinets and Stretta countertops. This option gave the client any choice of color for the cabinets. Behr Paints from Home Depot have a Cabinet enamel paint that is very hard wearing and they will color match from any object.

On this project - the client asked us to come up with a full design based on gray, black and silver including appliances - but with antique gold accents for the hardware.

Under cabinet lighting was critical to enhance the new tiled backsplash - (Tiles from Home Outlet). All the new lighting needed to enhance the new space and was designed to be dimmable LED

Even though we doubled the amount of cabinets we were still able to create an open look kitchen.

The Demo

Demo of the old cabinets became a little complex - on removal of the cabinets and formica backsplash we found that the inner cinderblock and plaster had disintegrated due to the Kitchen window not being sealed outside.

We spent a day cleaning out a bee's nest and completely removed any mold internally

We ended up having to refit the window, seal it correctly outside and then rebuild the inner decayed parts of the kitchen wall sealing it all with Hydraulic water stop cement.

We renewed the damaged ceiling and also rebuilt all the floor that was also damaged under the existing cabinets

M&N typically work on a fixed price for labour and in this case we were able to complete all these essentially required repairs at NO extra cost to the client.
